The summer of 2005 was one of the best summers for the children in “Gavroche”. It was full of emotions and nice experiences. The guests of the Center were 24 boys and girls from England – students in two of the most prestigious English universities – Oxford and Birmingham. The students were sent by the volunteers organizations OXAB and ICAB.

Every day, during two weeks time (as the maximum duration of the groups staying was), the girls and boys painted the children`s days in colours and emotions. At the end, the children embraced their new friends saying “Good bye” in English. All the students promised to be back again.

Jeremi Hill

The ambassador of UK visited the Gavroche home, accompanied by his wife and Mr. Petar Ivanov, cultural attache; in the British embassy. Their visit was organized according to the wish of the Ambassador as part of his visit in Varna.

Mr. Jeremy Hill paid attention and talked with representatives of all groups of children educated in the Gavroche home. He showed interest while being introduced round the home and the art-center in the basement which was equipped and opened with the financial help of the British embassy. The visit was covered by representatives of local newspapers and electronic media.

In August 20 young women finished successfully their training in a tailor’s course on the “Social integration” program. Their selection was done by the Job-center in Varna, the requirement being permanent unemployment and secondary education. After passing their exam they started work in “Tursport” company – Dobrich and the Gavroche association helped them in this.

For 3 years now children from a German town near Koln have been organizing a charity bazaar, presenting souvenirs, Christmas and Easter toys made by themselves. They send the money earned from sales for the art lessons of a talented boy from Gavroche, as well as for an operation of a girl who suffered badly from burning in an accident in her childhood.

This summer again continued the effective cooperation of the Gavroche association and volunteer students who visited the home through the mediating role of the British organization OXAB (Oxford in assistance on the Balkans). Every year Gavroche is glad to have the interest and attention of students from Oxford University who spend 2 weeks in the home and participate in the daily life of children, organizing visits and excursions for them. This summer the Home was visited by 4 groups of students from 13.07. till 02.10.2004.
